That would be an original design by the brilliant DJ Curtis, the Valiant Class USS Valiant.

Yes, I do all my animation in 3ds Max. Occasionally I use After FX to do some post-work, such as adding effects like lens flares and camera shake to videos and such. You cant directly import anything like meshes (3d models) or scenes that are in Max directly into After FX, but you can import movies that you render (.AVI files, for example) into After FX to do some effects editing.

As for backgrounds, basically what I usually do is I use an adjusted noise map (set usually with Noise Size 0.2, High 0.8, Low 0.7) as my stars, and in my box next to the black color square in the material editor, I create another noise map with one color set to black and the other to a color of my choosing, then I add lights into my 3d scene to give it that extra touch.

Theres a whole bunch of tutorials here, from 3d modeling to effects and such: http://www.tutorialized.com/tutorials/3DS-MAX/1
