im pretty sure PNG stands for Portable Network Graphics here's something on and DarkShadow you can't be expected to know everything =P

Portable Network Graphics format. PNG (usually pronounced "ping"), is
used for lossless compression. The PNG format displays images without
jagged edges while keeping file sizes relatively small, making them
popular on the web. PNG files are however generally larger than GIF
files.

yet a gif can contain a small animation, its funny, i mean it is known on basic programs like photoshop ( trust me it is basic compared to some of the proffesional gear) jpeg is the top quality one

the alpha channel, if you looka at vexs sprites they have alpha channels thats how there 3d this is haw rafitz explained it to me

Did you notice the simpleness of the alpha channel compared to the complexity of the ship? try to do something like that, because the objective isn't the big sprite...
basically go in to the filters then render then ligting effects the chose the alpa channel in the bit at the bottom
